Bago Edges Lutheran 1/17/13

Rockford, Illinois-It was a game that lived up to the hype. Two state ranked teams battled down to the wire Thursday night.

The crowd packed Rock Valley College's PE center to witness one of the best basketball games of the season.

Winnebago scored the first 12 points of the game. Lutheran was plagued by a wave of turnovers early. But the Crusaders bounced back to take a three point lead at halftime.

Bago won the third quarter to even up the game at 47-47 heading into the fourth quarter.  In the final seconds Bago's Matt Rineki, who scored 19 points, hit a three ball from the corner to put Bago up by one point. Jacoby Posley followed with a pair of free throws to push Bago's lead to three.

Lutheran had a chance to tie up the game.  With 3.3 seconds to go they worked the ball into the hands of three-point specialist Thomas Kopelman, but his three point bounced off the rim at the buzzer. Bago had a 68-65 win.

Kopelman scored 26 points for Lutheran. Posley had 16 points for Bago.  Bago goes to 6-0 in the Big Northern West and 19-0 overall. Lutheran is 14-3, 5-1.
