Cassioppi's Amazing Summer

The Hononegah senior has been racking up championships from Peru to Tulsa.

ROSCOE - Anthony Cassioppi's goal is to compete in the Olympics one day. This summer the Hononegah wrestler is giving every indication that he's on the right path to make that happen.

The last time we heard from Cassioppi he was crowned the IHSA 3A Heavyweight State Champion. Since then Cassioppi has been very busy. He's wrestled in three different tournaments in just the last month.

"I flew out to Peru for the Junior Pan American games, and I wrestled out there," says Cassioppi. "Right after Peru I flew straight to Florida for the Disney Duals, and I went 11-0 out there. Then I flew out to Tulsa for the Junior National Duals, and I went 7-0 in both styles out there so 14-0."

Cassioppi finished those three tournaments with a combined record of 32-0 and three championships. What's more impressive was his dominance in both the Freestyle and Greece-Roman competitions. He has worked hard at being great at both for one reason in particular.

"I don't like to lose, so of course I'm going to do my best," says Cassioppi.

His accomplishments haven't gone unnoticed. Cassioppi was named 'USA Wrestler of the Week' on June 27th.

'USA Wrestling Wrestler of the Week' it is senior level through youth so it's any age wrestling," says Cassioppi. "You know it was pretty awesome to be recognized as athlete of the week for that."

Even with all of his success Anthony hasn't changed who he is and how he approaches every match in every tournament.

"I can't be cocky. I don't want to be cocky," says Cassioppi. "I don't want to be too confident. I treat every wrestler the same. I just go out there and you know try to take care of business."

All of his hard work and success is in hopes of one day reaching his ultimate goal.

"The goal is the Olympics, win the Olympics," says Cassioppi. "You've got to shoot high."

Cassioppi will be a senior at Hononegah this fall.
