CHICAGO-The Cubs aren't waiting for the trade deadline at the end of the month. They got an offer Friday night they couldn't refuse. They dealt starting pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the A's for a package of four young players.

One of those players is the A's top prospect shortstop Addison Russell. He's been injured most of this season. At AA Midland he was batting .333 in 13 games. Russell is 20 years old.

The Cubs also get the A's top draft pick from last year 19 year old outfielder Billy McKinney. He was batting .241 with 10 homers and 33 RBI at Class A Stockton.

The Cubs also get starting pitcher Dan Straily. He was 10-8 last season with a 3.96 ERA with the A's, but he has been pitching in AAA ball this season since May.

The fourth player the Cubs receive is a player to be named later.

Samardzija was 2-7 for the Cubs this season, but only due to a lack of run support. His ERA is 2.83. Hammel has been a pleasant surprise in his first season with the Cubs. He was 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA. He was the winning pitcher in the Cubs 7-2 win over the Nationals Friday.

The A's have the best record in baseball at 53-33.
