The former Boylan Titan and Fighting Illini standout is doing his best at the Saints training camp to make their roster. The Saints have had five practices so far in White Sulphur Springs and by al accounts Dimke and veteran kicker Shayne Graham are all even in their competition.
Dimke has had two previous training camp stints with the Lions and the Buccaneers. He didn't make their final rosters. Earning a kicking job in the NFL has never been easy, because there are so few of them. Dimke says it's probably harder than ever now.
"It takes some luck and some good timing," says Dimke. "I know a lot of the kickers that have been in the league, you know, had the privilege of playing in Canada and NFL Europe and being on practice squads. That really doesn't happen much any more. So it's either you're in or your out. So it's just biding your time."
"I know if I've worked as hard as I can, and put my best foot forward whether I'm on a team or not it's all about timing and where you end up.
It's definitely, a blessing to be around some of the best athletes in the world, and to be able to work out with them and learn from them. Even though Shayne and I are going against each other we learn from each other. And learning from a guy that's been doing it for 15 years is a pretty cool thing to do."
The Saints will play their first preseason game next Friday, August 8th in St. Louis against the Rams. That game will be televised by the NFL Network.
