Byron Gets State Send-Off

BYRON-Byron's baseball team is living the dream. The dream of playing for a State championship. The Tigers will play in Peoria this weekend in the 2A State Tournament.

Thursday morning the players gathered with family and fans at the high school before boarding a bus for Peoria. As the T-Shirts on their backs read the Tigers are 35-5 this season. They won't be satisfied unless they can put a couple more games in that win column and bring back Byron's first state championship in baseball.

"We're not just satisfied with going down to State," says shortstop Tyler Nunez. "Obviously we want to go down there with hopes of winning the whole thing, and we think we have the talent this year, and we can step up and do it."

"We're really focused," says centerfielder Austin Carlson. "We've got our eyes on that one prize and that's been our goal all year. We just need to come through and finish strong with it."

"We'll go with our best down there and give it our best shot, and hopefully hit the ball," says Byron coach Ray Bielskis. "Our pitching and defense has been there all year and if we hit we usually win."

Byron will play Westmont at 5 p.m. Friday in a semifinal game at Dozer Park in Peoria.
