Chargers Release English

SAN DIEGO-The Chargers have given up on former NIU star Larry English. They released him on Tuesday. English was drafted in the first round 16th overall by the Chargers in 2009. That's the highest any NIU player has ever been drafted.  But English failed to live up to expectations.

Injuries were partly to blame. English spent much on the 2013 season in the injured reserve list with a pec injury.

English played in 52 games with the Chargers. He started nine of those. He had 82 tackles, 11 sacks and one forced fumble.

“We’d like to thank Larry for his five years of dedicated service to the Chargers,” said General Manager Tom Telesco in a statement released by the Chargers. “Larry always gave us everything he had on the field while making significant contributions to many deserving organizations in the San Diego community.”

English is now a free agent.
