Van Vleet Reflects on Season And The Shot

ROCKFORD- Fred Van Vleet is coming off a memorable basketball season with Wichita State, and it had an unforgettable ending. That last second shot that just missed against Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament. Now that classes are finished Van Vleet is back home and he took a few minutes to reflect on the season with Eyewitness News.

(Scott Leber) Q-How many times have you replayed that shot in your mind?

(Van Vleet) The first two weeks were a little tough for me just living with that every day. Not just the disappointment, but being a competitor you want every shot to go in. You want to be in that moment. That's what you dream of. You don't dream of missing. You dream of it going through the net and celebrating.

(Leber) Q-Even Kobe, Magic and LeBron have missed those shots. Those situations make you tougher.

(Van Vleet) Being in that position that platform playing one of the best teams in the country, and it's coming down to the ball in my hands. I never hung my head about it. I let it go. It's going to fuel me to work hard this off-season.

Van Vleet is able to look past that missed shot now and realize how unbelievable it was to be a part of a team that went unbeaten in the regular season.

(Van Vleet)That's something to hang my hat on. I feel really proud about that.

The Shockers lose star Cleanthony Early and some other solid players to graduation, but with Van Vleet, Ron Baker and Tekele Cotton back they feel like they can put together another magical season next year.

(Van Vleet) No doubt. You lose a great player like that the other guys have got to fill in myself included. We've got some new guys coming in. We'll see how they fare this summer. I'm pretty excited about the talent we've got. The goal every year is to win a National Championship.

(Leber Q) After the season ended did you consider, even for a few seconds, whether or not to go to the NBA?

(Van Vleet) You definitely think about it. You've got to look at every offer that's on the table. There were whispers and creeps about it, the possibility. I looked at it. I weighed the pros and cons and I made my decision. I'll never pass up the opportunity if it comes. I definitely thought about it, and I made my decision.

Van Vleet will return to Wichita State in June for summer school. At the end of June he'll head to New Jersey to attend the NIKE skills camp for the top point guards in the nation.
