Guilford-Belvidere Preview 9/20/12

Rockford, Illinos-There's nothing like a sense of urgency to spice up a high school football game.  Both Guilford and Belvidere will be playing with that sense tomorrow night at Belvidere in our Wendy's Game of the week.

The Magic number of wins to be eligible for the playoffs is five.  Since these two teams are both 2-2 and they both have some tough games ahead...the loser of this game could see its playoff hopes fade dramatically.

"We've talked about that to our kids all week. It is a big game," said Guilford Coach Mel Gilfillan.

"We've got to get a win. That's the most important thing for us to get to where we want to be a a program," said Belvidere Coach Matt Weckler.

The Bucs have lost their last two games to Hononegah and Harlem. They expect to get a boost this week by getting some guys healthy and back in the lineup.  So far the Bucs have relied on the running and passing of Troy Vandenbroek and the receiving of Kane Steger to lead them.  What they need is for their defense to tighten up, and they need more consistency.

"We need to come mentally prepared for four quarters," said Bucs receiver Kane Steger. "Just like Harlem last week we played three strong quarters but in the fourth quarter we mentally lost it."

Guilford's game plan is to do what they do best play physical.  And in this game get physical with Vandenbroek.

"We're going to go out there and get after him. Our goal is to pressure him. To knock him down," said Gilfillan.

"We're gonna have to get some pressure on the quarterback and make him throw the ball up and hopefully we get some interceptions," said Guilford defensive end Blake Morhardt.

The Vikings feel like they haven't begun to play up to their potential yet.  They've hurt themselves numerous times.

"We've got to clean up the mental mistakes, penalties and turnovers have hurt us," said Gilfillan.   Gilfillan) "We're running out of time. We've got to play our best football starting this week."

:"hey're a good team. A quick team," said Steger.

is a team we thinks we match up with in terms of physical ability," said Weckler.
