The Rockford IceHogs overcame a late two goal deficit to roar back and beat the Grand Rapids Griffins in a shootout, winning their home opener 5-4.

After a five-game road trip to begin their season, the IceHogs were greeted rudely in their home opener. Grand Rapids won the Calder Cup last season as the best team in the AHL, and the Griffins showed why. They scored the first two goals of the game in the first period, and controlled the puck throughout the contest.

But the Hogs fought back in the second period. Jeremy Morin tied the score at 2 a piece, only to see the Griffins take it back. Grand Rapids opened up another two goal lead in the third, when Teemu Pulkkinen scored his second goal of the game to make it 4-2 at the 9:47 mark.

Brad Winchester sneaked a goal in with barely two minutes remaining in the game to cut the deficit to one. Less than a minute later, Phillip Danault tied it up at 4 to send the game to overtime.

After a scoreless OT, the Hogs won in a shootout, capped off by Jeremy Morin pulling them ahead and Viktor Svedberg icing it. The IceHogs move to 4-2 on the season.
