Rockford’s biggest weekend of BMX Racing wrapped up Sunday. The Midwest Nationals finished at Searls Park. More than six thousand racers and fans enjoyed the action on the tiny dirt track. It’s only one weekend a year that this event is held, but one Rockford couple has spent a lifetime pouring their hearts into this track. Jake and Candy Karau have operated it for 30 years. Sunday they were recognized for their dedication to the sport.
“We got into it because it was a family sport. It was something our son took to. We realized right from the get-go that this was definitely a family sport where your child being a boy or a girl came to the facility, got involved and was able to be part of the action because there’s no sitting on the bench,” says Jake Karau, track operator.
The Karaus typically have fifteen volunteers who help them run the track.
