Martinez Returns To The Ring With A Win

ROCKFORD - All he does is win. He's Auburn High School senior Angel Martinez.

His latest boxing match was Saturday night at the Lombardi Club. He went three rounds against Omar Perez of Chicago at 118 pounds. Martinez was a little rusty because he hadn't fought in two months. Still he was the quicker, more aggressive fighter.

Martinez won by a unanimous decision. This fight was all patt of preparing Martinez to defend his national championship in December.

Martinez did not give himself a great grade for his performance Saturday.

"I give myself a C-plus. I'm a little rusty from not having fought in two months, but it was a good fight. Very good competition. A good home-town fight. I thought I helped entertain the crowd. I had a good time."

"He was a little rusty," says Martinez' trainer Jimmy Goodman. "He even knew it coming back to the corner he said, 'Man I'm a little rusty,' but I knew he was taking care of business. He was handling his opponent pretty good. It just sharpens his skills up after these two months off and then he'll come back strong in the next few months.'
