Lake Forest, Ill.- The Bears believe they got some much needed help for their defensive backfield when they took Kyle Fuller with their first pick in the draft. In rookie camp this weekend Fuller has been everything the coaches had hoped he’d be. Scott Leber reports from Lake Forest.
It’s always a thrill for any rookie the first time he puts on that NFL uniform. That’s true even for Fuller who was a four year starter, and an All-American at Virginia Tech. How did it feel to put on that jersey?
“It feels real good. It actually hit me a bit today, so I’m looking forward to finishing up rookie minicamp and everything else,” says Fuller.
There’s no easing into the NFL. The coaches have had these guys going full tilt. Fuller says he expected to go full speed.
“Yea, yea just from the meetings. We knew it was going to be fast tempo like that. It’s something to get used to, but it’s good for us,” says Fuller.
Some people question why the Bears would draft a corner number one when they need a huge upgrade at safety. Marc Trestman says cornerback is one of the most valuable positions in football the way offense flood the field with receivers.
“This is not a two wide receiver league. It’s a three wide receiver league, and we’re going to need Kyle,” says Marc Trestman, Bears Head Coach.
There are two things the Bears really like about Fuller. One is he comes from a football family. He has two older brothers who played in the NFL. And two his toughness which fits right in with the Bears tradition of hard-nosed defense.
Fuller has always been a hard-nosed player. Where does that come from?
“I guess it’s something you have to have growing up. It comes from the guys I played with growing up. My brothers always competing with them. I think it’s something I already had in me,” says Fuller.
“He’s got good size. He’s got good speed. He’s a willing and aggressive tackler, and a high-percentage tackler. He’s got excellent ball skills and great awareness, and he’s a football guy,” says Mel Tucker, Bears Defensive Coordinator.
