NIU's German Earns MAC Honor

DEKALB - NIU sophomore Eugene German was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, announced on Monday by the league office. German averaged 29 points and seven rebounds last week as the Huskies split a pair of games against the top-two teams in the MAC.

On Saturday (Feb. 10) against first-place Buffalo, German scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds to lead the Huskies to their first win over the Bulls since 2006. German scored the game-winning basket with four seconds left to lift the Huskies to a 90-88 overtime victory.

Earlier in the week against Toledo (Feb. 6), the Gary, Ind., native scored a career-high 30 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists as the Huskies pushed MAC West leading Toledo to the wire before falling, 82-77. German’s 30 points was the most scored by a Huskie in a game since Xavier Silas netted 34 on Feb. 12, 2011, against Kent State.

For the season, German leads the MAC, and ranks 42nd in the country, averaging 20.0 points per game. The sophomore guard has scored in double figures in all 25 games this season, the only Huskie to do so. He has also reached double figures 40 times in his career, including 33 of his last 34 games. In league play, German is averaging 20.2 points per game, second-best in the MAC, and is shooting 79.2 percent from the free-throw line, tied for ninth-best in the conference.

This is the first MAC Player of the Week honor for German and the first for a Huskie since Travon Baker collected the weekly award on Jan. 25, 2016.
