"This particular group I'm very proud of their desire and work ethic to just be here," said Frederick. "They know that they haven't had historically a lot of success. And they know that there's others walking the hallways that haven't chosen to play, and it makes it a little more difficult when they have to go both ways and fill positions that maybe they haven't played before."
The Indians return only two starters from a team that went 2-7 last season. Senior wingback and linebacker Jay Green will be asked to lead this team.
"This year we have a pretty young team," said Green. "We have a lot of lerning to do. A lot of new guys."
The other returning starter is lineman Kristian Sanders. Other players to watch for this year will be senior lineman Aaron Wright, junior fullback/linebacker Dylan Paul, and junior quarterback Tanner Harker. This is his first year out for football.
The inexperience has forced Frederick to switch his scheme on offense. Pecatonica will rely more on the ground game this year.
"The last four or five years we've been running the spread offense. We had a lot of tall, athletic kids, and that worked really well for us," said Frederick. "But now we're getting into a point where we have some smaller, quicker, young men who I think are going to fit more into a stronger running focused game with some play action. It's coming along slowly. They're very inexperienced, but you can see glimpses."
