In the fifth minute, poor defense on the Americans and a missed touch by Geoff Cameron falls to Nani who beats Tim Howard up top. Portugal takes a 1-0 lead. In the 64th minute off the U.S. corner kick, Jermaine Jones bends one in the net. The U.S. ties the game at one. In the 81st minute, Michael Bradley touches to Graham Zusi and Zusi gets the ball to Clint Dempsey. Dempsey guides it in off his mid-section. The U.S. leads 2-1 until stoppage time. The U.S. all but has it won when Michael Bradley turns the ball over. Cristiano Ronaldo has a great cross to Silvestre Varela who heads in the goal in the final seconds. Portugal gets the equalizer and the game ends in a 2-2 draw.
With a win so close, it was a disappointing way for the U.S. to end. But a draw is not a bad thing. The U.S. still has a good chance of advancing on Thursday.
Here are the scenarios to send the U.S. through to the Round of 16:
1.If the U.S. beats Germany
2.If the U.S. and Germany draw
3.If the U.S. loses but Portugal and Ghana draw
4.It’s like that the U.S. advances if Portugal beats Ghana (depends on points and goal differential)
The U.S. and Germany are tied with four points. Portugal and Ghana are both tied with one point. The top two teams advance. The U.S. takes on Germany Thursday at 11am.
