The Division III awards both went to Rock Valley College as Jared Mayes was named NJCAA Division III Player of the Year and Craig Doty was named NJCAA Division III Coach of the Year. Mayes and Doty helped lead the Golden Eagles to the first national championship in the 48 year history of the men’s basketball program, and a school record 30 wins.
Mayes, a 6’-4” freshman forward from Rockford Jefferson High School, averaged 22 points per game in the NJCAA tournament, including 55 points total in the semifinals and championship game. Mayes was also RVC’s leading scorer on the season with a 19 points per game average. Last week the NJCAA also honored Mayes as a first team All-American selection. His other post-season honors include first team All-Region (NJCAA Region IV) and first team All-Conference (N4C).
Doty has also been collecting numerous post-season awards. Just last week he was honored by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) as Junior College Coach of the Year for men’s basketball. His other awards this season include being named Don Klaas Region IV coach of the year, District 2 Coach of the Year, and Gary S. Cole Coach of the NJCAA Tournament.
Doty has compiled a 49-21 record in two seasons at the helm for RVC and has taken the Golden Eagles to the NJCAA tournament in both seasons, finishing seventh in 2013 before winning the national championship this season.
