He was the head coach at Auburn from 1994-95 through 1996-07. The J-Hawks were 10-17 during those years. He was the head coach at Jefferson from 1997-98 through 1999-2000. The J-Hawks record during that stretch was 6-21. Schmitz again was the head coach at Jefferson from 2010-11 through 2011-12 when the J-Hawks went 7-11.
The overall records might not be impressive, but Auburn and Jefferson have struggled badly over the past 25 years and at each stop Schmitz raised the level of play of those teams and made them competitive in the NIC-10. Schmitz has also been an assistant coach at Boylan and at Lutheran on multiple playoff teams.
He stresses a physical style of play makes him similar to the man he replaces at Dakota Jerry Lano. Lano retired at the end of last season. He guided Dakota to three state championships.
