LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y. – Rock Valley College won their first men’s basketball national championship Saturday. The Golden Eagles beat Caldwell Tech (NC) 79-69 in the Division III title game.
The Golden Eagles trailed by eight at halftime but outscored Caldwell Tech 55-37 in the second half. Freshman forward Jared Mayes and L.T. Davis each had 16 points in the last twenty minutes of the game to lead their team to victory. Mayes was the leading scorer with 28 total points and five rebounds.
Davis scored five three-pointers and finished the day with 21 points. Sophomore guard Brandt Voiles led the Golden Eagles in rebounds. Voiles had eight rebounds and six assists.
The Golden Eagles’ road to the championship included wins over Nassau (NY) in the quarterfinals and defending champion Brookdale (NJ) in the semifinals. Rock Valley College finishes the 2014 season with a 30-5 record and a national championship title.
