BELVIDERE - A teen pleads guilty to a gang retaliation shooting.

Pedro Sanchez, 18, received 16 years in prison for a shooting incident that happened in June 2011.  He opened fire at rival gang members in the 500 block of Starr Street.  One person was hit in the abdomen.  Boone Co. State's Attorney Michele Courier says the shooting was in retaliation for being harassed by those gang members.

Even though Sanchez was only 16 when he was arrested, Courier says the sentencing should send a message to other gang members.  "We should not tolerate gang violence of any sort regardless of the age of the offender and [I'll] continue to prosecute juvenile gang members as adults in hopes of getting tough sentences."
