Beckman's Job Safe For Now

Illini Director of Athletics Mike Thomas says Tim Beckman will return as the head football coach next year.
CHAMPAIGN-Not many Big Ten football coaches can survive after winning only one conference game in two years. Tim Beckman will. Illini Director of Athletics Mike Thomas tells our sister station WCIA in Champaign that Beckman will be back as the head coach next season.

"Yea Tim Beckman will be coaching the team next year. You know his program, I think there's a great culture there. The kids have a great attiutdue. I think folks would say this year that the kids played with a lot of fight. I'm confident that Tim can get us to where we want to go, and that he'll continue to do things the right way," says Thomas.

The Illini improved from two wins last year to four wins this year. Thomas says the offense was clearly improved, but the defense will need to get better for the Illini to be successful in the future.

Thomas wouldn't speculate on what coaching changes might be made to Beckman's staff this offseason.

Thomas says while the results haven't been as good on the field as everyone would like, he is happy with the way the players have conducted themselves off the field and in the classroom under Beckman's guidance.
