CHICAGO - A federal appeals court squashes any hopes Rita Crundwell had of getting out of her near 20 year sentence.
A three-judge panel of the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals said her punishment definitely fits the crime. Crundwell, the former comptroller for the city of Dixon, stole more than $50 million from the city over a 20+ year span. Its been called the largest municipal fraud in U.S. history.
The panel's decision comes just two weeks after prosecutors and Crundwell's lawyer presented their arguments over the appeal. Crundwell is currently lodged at a federal prison in Minnesota.
