Huskies Search For Lynch's Replacement

A quarterback competition is underway in DeKalb to find NIU's next starting quarterback.
DEKALB-Jordan Lynch has left some big shoes to fill at NIU. So big that no one man can do it. But three Huskies would like a crack at it.

The quarterback derby to replace Lynch at NIU’s starter began last week with the start of spring practices.  And it’s not likely to end until mid August a week or two before the Huskies open their season.

"It has to play out," says NIU coach Rod Carey. "We have 14 more practices this spring, and we have 29 in fall camp before we go into game week."

The three candidates are redshirt junior Matt McIntosh. Redshirt sophomore Drew Hare and Western Michigan transfer Anthony Maddie another redshirt sophomore and the former quarterback at Aurora Christian.

"McIntosh probably has the most experience," says Carey. "Drew probably throws the ball a little bit better, and Maddie he’s probably got the best quickness around there moving around."

Hare threw only five passes last season and McIntosh threw only two.  Maddie sat out the season. For now McIntosh is the guy getting most of the reps with the first team offense. But that doesn’t mean a lot at this point.

"It’s wide open," says McIntosh. "It’s whoever can do the best job. The fairest way to do it is who can score the most points. Who can run the offense the fastest. I can run the ball and I think I can throw the ball as well. I’m more of a dual-threat quarterback."

"We’re trying to put them in as many pressure situations as we can to really find the right guy," says Carey.

If the Huskies have to replace a Heisman caliber quarterback this is the year to do it. They return four starting offensive linemen, their top three receivers and their two best running backs.

"Whoever is the guy they’re going to have a lot of weapons around them and that’s going to make the job a lot easier," says Carey.

Fans can check out all three quarterbacks at NIU’s spring game on Saturday, April 19th.
