Pipini Dominating Again At Rockford Speedway

Alex Papini is turning the Rockford Speedway into his own victory lane again.
ROCKFORD-Alex Papini is proving that his Late Model season championship last year was no fluke.

His 39 car keeps showing up first at the finish line week after week. He's won five straight feature races the past five Saturday nights.

"We're just here to do our job, and we've made that obvious what that is the last few weeks," Papini said to Eyewitness news.

It was obvious last year when Papini won eight feature races on his way to winning the Late Model season championship. That momentum has carried over for the Machesney Park racer and his crew.

"We don't always have the fastest car every night, but my guys make sure that 20 laps into a run we have the fastest car by the end of the race, and that's what counts," he says.

Papini also says the biggest adjustment this year has been getting used to the new Hoosier tires that the Late Models are using.

"It's real unpredictable. Every time you go on the race track you don't know what your car is going to do."

Papini's dominance has made him a marked man in the Late Models.

"We've got a target on our back right now. You can tell by watching the race the way people race us and race other people. Last year we made it known that this is our track, and they're going to have to beat us. We won three races in a row (this year) and they put 25 pounds on us trying to slow us down, and we came back the next week and won another one. We've just flat got this thing dialed in, and everybody's kind of upset about it whining and crying, but we're just going to keep moving forward. We don't let them get in our head."
