Bears-Saints Preview

Scott Leber previews Sunday's Bears-Saints game.
LAKE FOREST-If the Bears thought they had their work cut out facing the Lions offense last week, wait until they take the field this Sunday.  They’ll face a Saints team that features an offense that is as good as any in the NFL.

If you watched the Monday night football game a few days ago between the Saints and the Dolphins you know exactly what the Saints are capable of.  They put up 38 points on one of the NFL’s better defenses.  Their attack begins with quarterback Drew Brees.

"He’s a specialist and an expert in everything that they do, plus he’s a gym rat," says Bears coach Marc Trestman. "He loves the game. He’s an image guy. He’s a visualizer, and an uncanny ability to throw the football with tremendous accuracy."

Brees has already passed for more than 14 hundred yards and his quarterback rating is a shade under 104.

"The biggest thing we’ve got to do is get pressure in his face. Force him to step up and inside we’ve got to get some push." says defensive end Corey Wootton.

Saints All-purpose back Darren Sproles had the Dolphins chasing him all over the field last Monday night.

"We’ve got to deal with Sproles not only on the offensive side of the ball as a defense, but also on special teams," says Trestman. "He’s back there returning kicks. He’s a hard guy to find."

And then there’s Saints tight end Jimmy Graham. He’s already scored six touchdowns this season.  He causes the biggest matchup problems for defenses.

"There’s multiple issues," says Trestman. "Obviously you go out there to cover him. If you double him you’re going to leave space inside to run the football."

The Saints defense isn’t shabby either.  It’s given up the fifth fewest points in the NFL.

If any one knows the Saints it’s offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod. He played for them the last six years.  Any chance he can provide the Bears with some insights into what they might do Sunday?

"Nobody’s come to me for any tips or anything like that," says Bushrod. "When you have the type of weapons they have you’ve got to try to throw them off a bit. And that’s gonna come from us to on offense. We have to fight to keep them off the field as much as possible.
