Scarpetta Signed By Braves

Cody Scarpetta is getting a second shot at affiliated baseball thanks to the Braves.
ROCKFORD-Cody Scarpetta's baseball comeback form Tommy John surgery has taken another big step forward. He was signed by the Atlanta Braves organization Monday.

The Braves have assigned him to their high Class A team in Lynchburg, Virginia the Lynchburg Hillcats. He'll make his first start for them Thursday.

Scarpetta spent the better part of six seasons in the Brewers minor league system before needing surgery to replace the main ligament in his pitching elbow. Last winter the Brewers released him, so Scarpetta signed with the Independent Lancaster Barnstormers of Pennsylvania. He was 0-2 there with a 5.13 ERA. But he did strike out 37 batters in 40.1 innings of work.

Scarpetta told Eyewitness News in a phone interview that he didn't have to think long about the Braves' offer.

"I know they kind of kept up on me throughout this whole spring," said Scarpetta. "When I got to the ballpark today I talked to the Braves, and they said they were interested in signing me, and I said 'OK let's do it'. It happened pretty quickly, and I'm just very excited and thankful for another chance."
