Dimke Ready For Second NFL Shot 6/21/13

Former Boylan and Illini kicker Derek Dimke is looking forward to training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Rockford, Illinois-Boylan alumn and former Fighting Illini kicker Derek Dimke will be reporting to training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next month. Friday he wasn't using his kicking leg. He was showing off his golf swing at the Boylan Open at the Rockford Country Club.

He was one of 216 golfers who participated. Dimke was having some fun in a foursome with some of his old high school buddies, but it'll be all business at training camp.

Last year Dimke was invited to camp with the Detroit Lions. He played well in preseason action, but he had no chance of beating out veteran Jason Hansen. Dimke was released before the regular season.

This season he's in a similar situation behind six year veteran Connor Barth. Barth was 28 of 33 in field goals last season with a long of 57 yards. He was also perfect on all 39 of his extra point attempts.

"It's a little bit different situation, but down in Tampa I will get a lot of preseason reps, and a lot of exposure for the other teams," said Dimke to Eyewitness News. "As for it working out in Tampa you never nkow what can happen. Somebody gets hurt. Something falls through a roster spot. You just have to be ready at all times."

Dimke says his experience with the Lions last year will help a lot this year.

"Definately I'll be a lot more relaxed. The first year when you get into the next level of what you're doing it's a little nerve-wracking. But this year it's a lot different, and I feel a lot more relaxed."

Dimke's special teams coach in Tampa will be former Bears head coach Dave Wannstedt.

"He's a great guy," says Dimke. "He knows coach (Ron) Zook who was my coach in college. They've been in touch, and they're great guys. It's a really good atmosphere down there. All the coaches are very positive. They have a fresh staff down there. It's a great place to be."
