Legendary Coach Dies

Former East Track Coach Chuck Wallin has passed away.
ROCKFORD-It's a sad time for the East E-RAB nation. It's in mourning over the passing of former legendary track & field and cross country coach Chuck Wallin. Wallin died on Thursday.

In the 1970s and '80s he had multiple cross country teams advance to State, and he coached numerous standout track & field athletes. Wallin also was the driving force behind making the East Relays one of the top high school track & field meets in the state.

One of Wallin's standout athletes was current East track coach Anthony Wilson.

"Chuck Wallin was a very great man. Not only was he a coach. He was a mentor," says Wilson. "Anybody who knows Chuck Wallin knows that in sub-zero degree weather he would never put sweats on. He was always out in front of the runners, so he was a type of guy he would never tell you something to do that he couldn't do."

"I had an opportunity to see Mr. Wallin right before he passed, and I went into the room and there were a couple other fellow E-RABS in there and he kind of beckoned me with his hands to come a little closer to him, and one of the words that he whispered was E-RAB pride.

Wallin had also been a science teacher at East.
