QB Jimmy Clausen Seizes Opportunity With Bears

Former Panthers quarterback Jimmy Clausen is busy learning the Bears' offense and competing for Cutler's backup position.
Lake Forest, Ill.- There was a fifth man throwing long balls at Bears minicamp Wednesday. Former Panthers Quarterback Jimmy Clausen is the newest addition after signing a one year contract Sunday.

"It's a great opportunity and all I can ask for is an opportunity so I've just got to go out each and everyday, compete and work hard," says Clausen.

Clausen was a second round pick by the Carolina Paanthers in 2010 out of Notre Dame. He started in ten games as a rookie but threw for just three touchdowns and nine interceptions in thirteen outings.

"I had a rough rookie year but just coming back my second and third just to learn, to watch the game from the sidelines. I did that at Notre Dame as well. And it just helped me grow. I learned a lot of knowledge especially defensively," says Clausen.

His football smarts and resiliency after having shoulder surgery in September caught the Bears' attention. This might be Clausen's first time in a Bears jersey but he and Trestman are no strangers. Trestman actually helped him prepare for the draft back in 2010. Now Clausen is back to work with the man who helped him get his start.

"He actually worked me out for my pro day down in Notre Dame. So I worked with him for about a week and a half getting ready for the combine. Just to be with Coach Trestman for that week and a half, I really learned a lot," says Clausen.

There's no better place for Clausen to continue his education than Chicago. Even Browns' legend Bernie Kozar stopped by to teach today.

"It's definitely a lot of knowledge in the room which is great. Everybody is still learning and the guys are really helping me out a lot," says Clausen.

Clausen will have to keep learning the offense and compete with four other players to be Jay Cutler's primary backup.

"Competition brings out the best in people and I'm looking forward to competing," says Clausen.
