UPDATE:  Baby Kayden is now home.  Rock County Sheriff's Deputies escorted the father to the grandmother's home from where Kayden was abducted to pick up clothing and supplies.  The child is being kept in an undisclosed location.

UPDATE (4:26pm): The U.S. Attorney's Office announces 31 year-old Kristen Smith is charged with kidnapping.  If convicted, she could face life in prison.  According to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Madison, Smith is accused of taking Kayden Powell from his Beloit home and transported him across state lines to Iowa.  She was arrested on unrelated charges and is currently being held in the Cedar County Jail in Tipton, IA.

UPDATE (11:09am): Town of Beloit Police Chief Steve Kopp reports the baby has been found safe and sound in West Branch, IA around 10:15am.  Powell was found near a gas station inside a tote bag along I-80.

Police say the baby was taken by Kristin Rose Smith, who is reportedly from Denver, CO, left the home after an argument, apparently headed back to Colorado.  Family members called her on her cell phone when they realized the child was missing.  She then reportedly denied having the child, and police believe that is when she left the child in a tote bag outside at a gas station along the interstate.  Smith was picked up by police in West Branch, IA along I-80 and arrested on a felony fraud warrant out of Texas.

UPDATE (2/7/14): Town of Beloit Police have called for a press conference at 11am.  We'll provide an update as it becomes available.

BELOIT- Newborn Kayden J. Powell went missing from a Beloit, Wisconsin home at 836 East Homeland Court at 4:34 AM Thursday. His mother, Brianna Marshall woke up and discovered the baby was gone.

“There were a few other friends and relatives at the home, but it was not a party situation as far we’ve determined. So at this point we’re just in the process of locating all of those individuals and interviewing them,” said Beloit Police Chief Steven Kopp.

Around 40 FBI, Beloit Police, Rock County Sheriff’s officers searched the home for evidence.

“We are receiving numerous leads at a very rapid rate, we have a Deputy Sheriff that is answering those leads and looking into each and every one of them,” said Rock County Sheriff Robert Spoden.

Kayden is African-American, 20 inches and 6 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Police have not identified any suspects and no arrests have been made in the case.

Family is distraught by the disappearance taking place just days after the baby was brought home from the hospital.

“I’m already devastated because he’s gone. I’ve held my great-nephew one time and that was yesterday,” said Family Member Mark Bennet.

Police have not issued an Amber Alert. That’s because law enforcement does not have a suspect or vehicle description.
