WTVO/WQRF - The state recoups $26.3 million from those illegally benefiting from unemployment benefits.
In the past three years, the Illinois Dept. of Employment Security confiscated nearly 60,000 federal tax refunds. The agency uses those refunds to recover the money. However, if the refund is not enough to cover what was gained from the unemployment benefits, then future refunds will be garnished until the balance is fully paid.
"Illinois workers are honest and proud" says IDES Director Jay Rowell. "Those who steal money from the fund used to help our neighbors who are out of work must be held accountable.
Roughly $120 million has been recovered in the past three years.
