ROCKFORD- Located right behind Davis Park, Rockford residents and visitors can't miss the vacant Amerock building.
Now developers will turn it into a new hotel and conference center along with a parking deck for around 200 cars.
First Ward Alderman Tim Durkee says the project is crucial "no city can survive when its downtown decays."
Milwaukee-based Gorman and Company is looking to fund part of the project and break ground. The Forest City will foot the rest of the bill, which is around $16 million with bonds.
Along with the rehabbing of the property, there will also be a change to the flow of traffic downtown.
"They’ll be some changes in streets moving, current one way streets to two way streets, and some improvements to Chestnut Street."
Rockford Aldermen in support of the project, like Durkee believe the investment will provide much needed services downtown and create job opportunities.
