New Law Targets Sex Offenders on Halloween

Sex offenders are forbidden to participate in any Halloween related activity because of a new law.

Rockford, IL- Halloween is supposed to be a scary holiday, but along with fake ghouls and goblins, real life sex offenders can be out and about too. Now a new law aims to make sure they aren't targeting your children.

The law already forbids child sex offenders from dressing as Santa on Christmas, or a bunny for easter. New provisions also ban any halloween activities, including handing out candy or even being present around trick-or-treaters. What it does not include is sex offender parents of young children. Those parents may still take their own kids out, but cannot interact with others. Winnebago County Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro says there has not been any case in recent years of Halloween predators, but police will be out on heavy patrol.

"It's always a concern with sex offenders, it's something that we monitor very closely, Iasparro said."

He also advises parents to avoid known predator homes. You can find a list of sexual offenders at www.isp.state.il.us/sor
