Officer Involved Shooting in Poplar Grove Leaves Man Dead

The Winnebago County Integrity Task Force has been called in to investigate.
Tricia Lefevre’s husband heard what they thought were fireworks, but it really was gunshots at a home next door.

It was fired by a Boone County Sheriff’s Deputy, killing a manYou can see the pieces of glass and a gaping bullet hole at the home of 336 Springmeadow Drive.

It started as a home invasion.Lefevre says “a guy went there saying they owed him money and they gave him what they had and apparently he didn’t like what they gave him and tried to make his way in.”

Police say the man was able to shoot his way into the home. The owner of the house escaped and called police.A deputy shot the gunman, and he died at the scene.

Neighbors say there were two children inside during the shooting.Lefevre says “the youngest one, the bullet ricochet and just grazed her elbow.”

Caryn Haefke moved her family from Rockford to escape violence. Haefke says “I wasn’t expecting after moving to this type of neighborhood to come across something like this. It’s very much country.”

Lefevre is keeping her screen doors closed going forward.The name of the male subject has not been released pending notification to his family. Neither have details on the deputies involved.
