Rockford Police Help Create "Youth Cadets"

ROCKFORD - The Department hosting its "Youth and Junior Police Academy" beginning Monday.
ROCKFORD - The Rockford Police Department providing a great opportunity for teens looking for something to do this summer.

They are hosting their "Youth and Junior Police Academy" all this week. It's for kids interested in learning about law enforcement in the community.

The "youth cadets" will learn how to be an asset to their neighborhood through a variety of hands-on activities.

Police say it's a rewarding experience for them as well.

"[Kids] get to see us in a different light," says Sgt. Michael Spelman of the Rockford Police Department. "They see us as people, we're approachable, we take the time to answer their questions and hopefully show them that we're people too. We want to show them how fun our job is, and that it's enjoyable and a good career."

The first session runs Monday, June 16th to Friday, June 20th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Second Congregational United Church in Rockford.
