San Francisco Tops List as Most Expensive U.S. Summer Getaway

Yes, San Francisco is more expensive than New York and Chicago, but not by much.
ROCKFORD - Washington D.C. is the most walkable city in the country, according to researchers at George Washington University and Smart Growth America.

D.C., New York and Boston earned the top three spots as most "walkable urban places." Followed by San Francisco and Chicago. The findings are based on walking distances between everyday destinations like home, work and school.

Other major cities like Miami, Atlanta and Los Angeles are making strides toward more walkability.


But while San Francisco and Chicago top the list of most walkable cities -- they're also topping the list of priciest summer getaway in the u-s according to tripadvisor.com San Francisco is the most expensive at just a little more than $500 per visit, topping New York by just $6.

Chicago comes in at number six averaging a cost of about $423. The least expensive destination, surprisingly is Las Vegas at $276. TripIndex Cities compares the cost of an evening out and overnight stay in 67 key tourist cities around the U.S. and world, taking into account typical costs for two for cocktails, a two-course dinner paired with a bottle of wine, round-trip taxi transportation, and a one night stay in a hotel during the summer travel months from June to August.
