ROCKFORD, Ill. - Leaders of family-owned Schnuck Markets, Inc.
today announced plans to shutter the Hilander store at 3710 North Main Street
at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 26.
No jobs will be lost.
President and Chief Operating Officer Todd Schnuck said, "This is
an isolated store closing, and we've worked hard to ensure that all 66 Main teammates
will have jobs at other area Hilander and Logli locations."
Schnuck cited several reasons for the decision
to close the store. "Main
was in decline at the time of the acquisition," Schnuck explained. "Prior to our taking over, the pharmacy prescription
list had been sold off and customers lost, hastening that decline. Despite our best efforts, competitive
pressures combined with consistently stagnant sales leave us little hope of
reversing the trend." Schnuck says closing
the store will allow the company to concentrate resources where they will be of
most value to customers and teammates.
Rockford Division Manager Dennis Canada hopes that customers in
the Main neighborhood will follow store teammates to other Hilander and Logli locations. "Teammates at Rockton and Loves Park Logli
stores and Hilander Rural are standing by in hopes of serving Main customers," Canada said.
Canada, who started working for Schnucks as a teen in 1971,
transferred to Rockford
this past September to oversee the expansion of what is now the company's
second largest market. "Eight months ago, we made a significant investment in
community, and since then, we have enhanced it by lowering prices across Logli
and Hilander stores, generating value in extremely hot ads and expanding our
private brand options," he said. "We
have one mission right now and that is to bring the best value we possibly can
