Christian Life Football Preview

Scott Leber previews the Christian Life football team.
Rockford, Illinois-Christian Life showed a lot of potential last year. But the young Eagles managed only three wins. Now the growing pains should be behind them.

The Eagles started several sophomores last season. Three of them received all-conference honors in the NAC. Now that nucleus is ready to take off.

"The baby Eagles are starting to grow up," says head coach Tony Ambrogio. "We're starting to see a little bit of maturity, and we're starting to expect more of these guys too."

The Eagles have only 26 players on varsity, but they're loaded at the skill positions.

"The biggest problem we're finding with the offense is we only have one football," says Ambrogio.  "We've got a lot of guys that can catch the ball. We've got quarterbcks that can throw. We've got running backs that want the ball."

Junior Brady Pond excels at running the spread option. He's a dual-threat quarterback. Receivers Rodney Quansah and Isaiah Jones have outstanding speed to give the Eagles an uptempo attack.

"That's our game this year," says Quansah. "We're going hard on every play. Explosive. Beat everyone off the ball, and do it hard."

The Eagles aren't big up front, but that's not essential in the spread offense. Leading the defense will be second team all-conference end Zach Stanphill and honorable mention all-conference safety Cameron Cassaro.

"We definitely will get to the playoffs this year," says Stanphill. "I think we've got the talent and age for it now. We were kind of young last year."

"Everyone's pumped up," says Quansah. "We've got the best guys out here. We don't need numbers as long as we've got the best guys we're going to be fine."
