WTVO/WQRF - The state announces $16.5 million to be distributed to parks across Illinois.

Nearly four dozen parks stand to benefit.  Most projects involve park expansion.

"Parks and outdoor recreational activities help make Illinois a great place to live and work" says Gov. Pat Quinn (D-IL).  "These projects will create jobs, allow more families to get active outdoors and promote healthy lifestyles."

Locally, Lions Park in DeKalb Co. will get $199,700 and Winnebago Co. received $241,300 for the Sabrooke Playground development.

For Sabrooke, the state contribution pays for about half of the project.  The total project is projected to cost $482,730.  The Rockford Park District won't have to foot the entire bill.  The Rockford Housing Authority has also committed $100,000.  Park amenities are expected to include sustainable design elements, a playground, shelter, community garden, multi-use sport field, full-size basketball court, and paths.

Construction is expected to begin in the fall.
