Winnebago Football Preview

The Indians hope to extend their string of playoff seasons.
WINNEBAGO-Last year was a magical year for Bago. It included a school record 11 wins, and the school’s first Big Northern West Championship. But most of the playmakers from that team have moved on. Only three starters return on both sides of the ball. So will this be a rebuilding year for the Indians?

"It’s always a rebuilding year," says head coach Mark Helm. "It’s a new start. It’s a new team. New faces."

But most of these kids experienced what happened last year, and the hope is that being a part of that winning atmosphere will carry over.

"It really doesn’t feel like starting over," says lineman Alex Manuel.  "It feels more like picking up where you left off. We just have a new group of kids. We come in, work hard, put the time in. Then we’ll hopefully see the results."

Where the Indians do have some experience is on the lines with Manuel, David Allabaugh, Hunter Eichenberger, Nicholas Zarembski, Jeremy Finley and Grant Spelman.

"I would like to think our strength and our confidence lies in our offensive line," says Helm. "That’s where we do have five seniors that have played together, and have done a good job."

The controls of the offense are being turned over to a sophomore, quarterback Jess Smith. Devin Heslop will lineup at fullback. Justin Wright will get carries at tailback. So will Nathan Aldritt.

"I think if we practice well and do the little things right, don’t turn the ball over, no penalties, play low and physical I think we’ll be just fine," says Allabaugh.
