UPDATE: Victims Killed In House Fire Identified

ROCKFORD - A vacant home goes up in flames claiming two lives.

UPDATE: The victims are identified as Timothy Porter, 59, and David Caperson, 47.  An autopsy confirms both men died as a result of smoke inhalation.  Both men were homeless.

UPDATE: Firefighters report heavy smoke and fire were showing as they pulled up to the home.  A homeless person approached the crew.  He stated he was sleeping inside the home when the fire broke out and that there were two people still inside.

Firefighters extinguished enough of the fire to perform a rescue operation.  However, it was too late.  They found the bodies of both victims on the second floor.  The man who alerted firefighters of the victims was taken to the hospital to get treatment for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.  Rockford Police is also conducting an investigation.
