UPDATE: Winnebago County Won't Issue Gay Marriage License Despite Approval From Attorney General

WINNEBAGO COUNTY - Attorney General Lisa Madigan approves of counties issuing gay marriage licenses, however many counties like Winnebago aren't ready to do that yet.
UPDATE (11:36am): Winnebago County Clerk Margie Mullins say the county will not issue gay marriage licenses until June 1, the original date lawmakers set for legalization.  "We are not prepared" says Mullins in a phone interview with Eyewitness News.  "We do not have the system ready that will entitle us to do these things.  We thought we would have time to prepare and get this done."

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is telling every county clerk statewide that marriage equality should be the law of Illinois effective immediately.

The law legalizing gay marriage in Illinois set a start date of June 1st, but a federal judge ruled Cook County should be providing them immediately.  His ruling did not impact any other county, however.  Madigan's interpretation opens the door for counties statewide to legally issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Governor Quinn praised Madigan's directive, saying in a statement, “Nobody should have to wait for equal rights when it comes to love. I encourage every county clerk in Illinois to quickly follow the Attorney General’s guidance.  Following this guidance, the Illinois Department of Public Health will now accept all marriage licenses issued by any county clerk in Illinois.”

Madigan's ruling was issued on Tuesday, and it is unclear if any county clerks in the Stateline area were prepared to immediately issue marriage licenses to same sex couples.

Lee County Clerk Cathy Myers and Jo Daviess County Clerk Jean Dimke both told Eyewitness News that they've asked the states attorney in their respective county to review Madigan's ruling before giving the go ahead to issue licenses.
