Winter Games Spark Hockey Interests

Lace up those skates! The winter games are sparking interest on Stateline ice.

Rockford- Hockey students start in chair hockey as a way to have support on the ice while learning how to skate. They then move up levels. Skater Nich Rehberg says it's about getting up no matter what when you fall.

"Just learning how to skate and getting better everyday," said Rehberg.

Carlson Ice Arena hockey assistant Riley Flodin says the rink has seen an increase in both boys and girls hockey and figure skating lessons.

She says the 2014 Winter Olympics have played a major role in sparking interest in the sport.

"Especially after the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup again and then with the Winter Olympics all the kids want to learn how to do what they're watching on TV," said Flodin.

Area parents are excited too. They believe hockey teaches kids important life lessons like "sportsmanship and teamwork," said Parent Christ Kobylewski.

Every day Carlson Ice Arena offers something for skaters to better their skills. And work towards the goal of winning gold one day.

"Now with the Olympics they've all got somebody that they want to be like and have their jersey number. They’re just always really excited," said Flodin.
