Woman Who Stole Cop Car Faces Additional Charges

ROCKFORD - The woman who stole a Winnebago County Sheriff squad car now faces felony charges.
UPDATE (1/17/14): McNutt now faces charges of felony escape and possession of a stolen vehicle.  She's due in court for arraignment at 1:30pm.

ROCKFORD- Kristina McNutt, 43, was being transported from Cook County to Winnebago County on a warrant.

Winnebago County Sheriff’s Senior Deputy Donald Hartshorn stopped at a Mobil Gas Station at 550 Southrock Drive to refuel. That’s when McNutt slipped out of her handcuffs and escaped the back seat of the car.

"As the Deputy went to try and grab her she went around the other side of the car and jumped into the driver's side and sped off in the vehicle," said Chief Deputy Sheriff Kurt Ditzler.

Almost an hour later deputies found the squad car in the 4900 block of Fielding Road, Rockford.

Neighbors told police she got a ride to the area of 7th Street and Sawyer Road. McNutt was found hiding in a garage in the 3100 block of 7th Street on Rockford’s southeast side.

The incident is now being reviewed internally by Sheriff's Administrative Personnel so any policy violations can be identified. "We're taking a look at all of our policies and we'll take a look at training. And we'll make a decision after we've had a chance to look at the whole incident and get a grasp on what exactly happened and take whatever appropriate action is necessary," explained Chief Deputy Sheriff Ditzler.

McNutt remains behind bars at the Winnebago County Jail. She was originally in custody for a contempt of court warrant with no bond.

Now additional charges are pending by the Winnebago County States Attorney.
