Deadline For Candidates To Enter March Primary Passes

ROCKFORD - Monday is the last day for candidates to file their petitions for the March Primary ballot.
ROCKFORD - Monday is the last day for candidates to file their petitions for the March Primary ballot.

This is the first time in a long time the filing period fell over a holiday weekend.  It, in turn gave possible candidates two fewer days to file instead of the normal six.  Winnebago Co. Clerk Margie Mullins says she's seen fewer precinct committee people filing this year and is worried we're going to see fewer contested races this coming March.

"We'll have to wait and see at the end of the day what all the names are and how the places are filled" says Mullins.  "Hopefully, there's going to be at least one candidate for every race."

One race to pay attention to is for Winnebago County Sheriff.  Gary Caruana, Frank Pobjecky, and Dave Fiduccia are running on the republican ticket.  Meanwhile, on the democratic side is a logjam.  It pits Bob Redmond, Randy Olsen, Bob Springer, Jeffrey Schroeder, and Glenn Heidenreich.  The Sheriff's position is being vacated by the soon-to-be retired, Sheriff Richard Meyers.
