ROCKFORD - The Rockford Police Dept. can now hire or re-hire officers.

The Dept. of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services awarded Rockford $625,000, that's enough money to bring in five police officers.

"Even as tight budgets have forced many law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of officers on duty, the safety of our communities must be our top priority" says Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL).  "This funding will help meet that goal by putting more cops on the beat."

Peoria also received $750,000 from the COPS grant program.  Their police department will be able to bring in six officers.
