Smaha Looking Forward To San Diego

Former Belvidere North standout Austin Smaha is looking forward to heading west for the Poinsettia Bowl.
DEKALB-The NIU Huskies will go after a school record 13th win next Thursday in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. Former Belvidere North standout Austin Smaha will try to help them reach that mark.

Smaha is a backup linebacker and a special teams starter as a freshman. He tells Eyewitness News that he's looking forward to the trip west.

"I've never been over there (the west coast). The closest I've been to the west coast was the trip when we went to Idaho, and we went to  Washington for a little bit. It would have been nice to win the (MAC) championship game, but everything happens for a reason and San Diego is not too bad."

Smaha says he's pleased with how things have gone his first year suiting up for the Huskies. "It's been really great coming here, not really starting or anything, but contributing. Anything to help out the team is fine with me."
