FREEPORT - Stephenson County residents could soon pay more in taxes, but that's entirely up to them.

Freeport School Board members want to raise the sales tax 1%.  Tuesday night, they voted 5-2 in favor of putting it on the ballot for the election coming up this spring.  Voters will then decide if they want the tax.  Board members say the money could bring in $1.5 million.

The money would be used to maintain or upgrade public school buildings throughout the county.
