Gov. Quinn Asks Residents to Help with Typhoon Haiyan Relief Efforts

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn is encouraging Illinois residents to help out with Typhoon Haiyan relief in the Phillipines.  The Governor visited volunteers at the Jose P. Rizal Heritage Center in Chicago who are supporting people impected by the most powerful storm ever to hit land in recorded history.

"I encourage everyone in Illinois to do what they can to contribute to these critical relief efforts," Governor Quinn said. "As the Philippines recovers from this unprecedented catastrophe, we want them to know they are in the hearts and prayers of the people of Illinois and help is on the way."

The Governor has ordered Illinois Department of Transportation trucks to stand ready to assist in the transportation of donated food and clothing at the Rizal Heritage Center to O'Hare for flights to Manila.

Locally, both the Salvation Army and Red Cross are taking donations.  The storm his especially close to home for the Salvation Army because 11,000 of its members serve in the Phillipines.
