Guilford Swim Team Assisant Coach Dies Suddenly and Unexpectedly

Chris Gyorkos died Monday night after reportedly slipping and falling on ice.
ROCKFORD -- An assistant swim coach at Guilford High School has died after reportedly slipping on ice and hitting his head.

Chris Gyorkos died Monday evening.  Rockford School officials say Gyorkos was hired in November after volunteering with the girls team at Guilford for three seasons. He was in his third season helping the boys team as well.

School officials did not confirm the cause of Gyorkos' death, but a source tells 'Eyewitness News' it was from a fall over the weekend.

Bill Miner, Guilford's head swim coach, informed the team of Mr. Gyorkos' death Tuesday, Dec. 31, before a morning practice.  "It didn't matter how good swimmers were, he was always in their corner, trying to help them get better," Miner said of Gyorkos. "He was everybody's coach. Everyone on our team meant something to him."

District grief counselors will be with the team at a Thursday noon practice.  They will also be at Guilford when students return to school Monday, Jan. 6.
