ROCKFORD- Members of the Honor Guard perform military honors for Rockford Meteorologist and Veteran Eric Nefstead.

Family and friends gathered to talk about their favorite memories with Eric, but most of all his passion for weather and gardening.

"Eric was a lot of fun. Probably one of the most fun times is I filled-in occasionally on the anchor desk and I got to work with him and the heat broke in the studio, so we came on the air at 5 A.M. and he was still in his big puffy jacket and I was sitting there chattering my teeth and we did everything we could not to laugh while we were doing the news," said Former Eyewitness News Reporter Mark Stevens

Eric truly loved his job and greeted viewers for decades with a friendly smile and sunny disposition.

Co-workers talked about working with Eric here at Eyewitness News and how he was always up for a good conversation and made you feel like the only person in the room.

"The first day that I was on the air we had a severe weather outbreak and I just remember how much help he was to me," said Former Eyewitness News Meteorologist Ty Shesky.

Stevens says Eric’s humor and hearty laugh will truly be missed.

"Oh he was a character. That’s the only way I could describe him, great guy to work with," said Stevens.

That sentiment is echoed by many who worked with him over the years. Eric’s engaging nature captured viewers and all who met him.

"He just lifted up your spirits. He was a guy that just always had a smile on his face and was always willing to share a story and ask you how you were doing. He was a great guy," said Shesky.
